Image compression reduces transfer size by removing redundant image data or encoding it more efficiently. The useful target is not the smallest possible file, but the smallest file that still looks acceptable at its intended display size.
A 2400-pixel camera photo displayed at 800 pixels should usually be resized first and then compressed. Compressing the oversized original alone wastes bytes on detail visitors cannot see.
Repeated JPEG exports accumulate visible artifacts. PNG is often larger for photographs but useful for sharp graphics and transparency. Always inspect text, faces, gradients, and high-contrast edges before keeping the result.
Start near 80–85 for a JPEG photograph, inspect the preview, and lower it gradually.
Compression does not need to change dimensions; use Resize Image when pixel dimensions are also too large.
