Choose the code for the workflow
QR codes can carry URLs and other structured text and are commonly scanned by phone cameras. One-dimensional barcodes suit established inventory, retail and logistics workflows. The receiving scanner or platform determines the accepted symbology; a visually valid code is not automatically registered in an industry system.
Protect the readable geometry
Both code types need clear space around their active marks. Do not crop that quiet zone or place decoration inside it. Use strong contrast, avoid reflective backgrounds, and export at sufficient resolution or as a vector when supported. Never stretch a barcode disproportionately because bar-width relationships carry information.
Test the real artifact
A code that scans on a bright monitor may fail after printing on a small curved label. Test the final material, size and printer with the actual scanner and with realistic lighting. For public QR links, prefer a short HTTPS URL on a domain you control and maintain the redirect for the lifetime of the printed item.
- Test multiple phone models or scanners
- Try damaged and low-light conditions
- Verify the decoded value, not only the scan beep
- Keep human-readable text where the workflow needs it
