How to use Word Counter

What this tool helps you do

Word counts vary because software disagrees about hyphens, apostrophes, numbers, URLs, and scripts without spaces. This tool provides a consistent count plus characters, lines, paragraphs, and reading estimates for everyday editing.

When it is useful

  • Checking an assignment limit
  • Planning article length
  • Reviewing social post limits
  • Estimating reading time

A practical example

Paste exactly: Hello world. This is LipiCode! The current counter reports 5 words, 30 characters, 26 characters without whitespace, 2 sentences and 1 paragraph. Both reading and speaking estimates show 1 minute because non-empty estimates round up.

Limitations and common mistakes

Word tokens include letters and numbers and can keep an apostrophe, hyphen or dot inside a token. Abbreviations and punctuation can affect sentence counting. JavaScript character length counts UTF-16 code units, so an emoji can count as more than one character. The destination application's rules may differ.

How to use Word Counter

  1. Type or paste plain text into Enter Your Text.
  2. Read the live word and character counts; no submit action is needed.
  3. Use blank lines to separate paragraphs if paragraph count matters.
  4. For a document, use Load from File. TXT, DOCX and PDF extraction uses the server; pasted text is counted in the browser.
  5. Compare the destination's counter before submitting a strict-length assignment or application.

Inputs and processing

Typed and pasted text is analyzed locally. File import accepts TXT, DOCX or PDF below 10,000,000 bytes (about 10 MB) and uploads the document for text extraction. Legacy DOC files are not supported. Formatting and embedded images are not counted as ordinary text.

If something goes wrong

My document count differs from Word

Inspect the extracted text for headers, footers, tables or scanned pages. Use the application's final count where its submission rules apply.

A PDF imports little text

It may be a scan or use a complex text layout. Inspect the extracted text and correct it before relying on the count.

Frequently asked questions

How are reading and speaking time calculated?

Reading time is words divided by 225; speaking time is words divided by 130. Non-empty results round up to a whole minute. These are rough editing estimates.

Is my text uploaded?

Typing and pasting stay in the page. Load from File uploads the selected document for text extraction.

What separates paragraphs?

One or more blank lines. A single line break changes line count without necessarily starting a new paragraph.
