How to use Compress PDF

What this tool helps you do

PDF compression reduces the bytes needed to store a document. Lossless compression repacks objects and streams without reducing image quality. Balanced and Smaller file also resize and recompress eligible images while keeping document text as text.

When it is useful

  • Meeting an attachment size limit
  • Reducing image-heavy scanned PDFs
  • Preparing lighter downloads

A practical example

A scan containing large photos may shrink with Balanced. A compact text-only PDF may show no saving; in that case the original file is returned unchanged.

Limitations and common mistakes

No preset guarantees a target file size. Lossy compression can soften scanned text and photos. Existing digital signatures may be invalidated. Inspect forms, links and bookmarks after processing. Keep your source file.

How to use Compress PDF

  1. Choose one unencrypted PDF.
  2. Start with Lossless if image quality matters. Choose Balanced or Smaller file if you can accept reduced image detail.
  3. Compress and compare the displayed sizes. Preview the output, then download and inspect fine print.

Inputs and processing

PDF up to 25MB and 40 pages. Files are uploaded for server processing. Lossless uses qpdf stream and object compression. Balanced uses JPEG quality 80 and a 1600-pixel maximum image dimension; Smaller file uses quality 55 and 1000 pixels. Transparent images are skipped. Image presets support at most 100 unique images and 80 million decoded pixels; use Lossless for larger image workloads.

If something goes wrong

The size did not change

The PDF may already be optimized. Try an image preset if reduced image quality is acceptable.

Fine text looks soft

Use Lossless or Balanced rather than Smaller file. Start again from the original.

Frequently asked questions
